Henry Horatio Hobson is one of the greatest comic characters in English drama. Self-made man, shopkeeper, skinflint and boozer, he’s a tyrant to his daughters and a law unto himself. When Maggie, his eldest daughter, defies Hobson’s wishes by marrying Will Mossop, his own boot-maker, a battle of wills begins in which he stands to lose his customers, his girls and his pride, but ultimately it is Hobson’s choice.

2016 will mark the one hundredth anniversary of the first UK production of Harold Brighouse’s classic comedy, which is rich with laughter, wit and warmth.

Martin Shaw is one of the UK’s favourite actors, well-known for starring in Inspector George Gently, Judge John Deed, and The Professionals on television. His stage roles include Saturday, Sunday, Monday opposite Laurence Olivier; he was Tony Award nominated for An Ideal Husband on Broadway and won a Drama Desk award. Recent West End credits include A Man for All Seasons and Twelve Angry Men.

“Tip top performances, high production values, EXTREMELY WELL DONE.” The Times ****

“Martin Shaw on superb form…A DELIGHTFUL PRODUCTION” Daily Telegraph ****

Fantastic , though it wouldnt be a patch on the film but it was with superb acting from the main characters and everyone else . There wasnt a boring bit in it , the issues remain today

Lynn Fixter

Excellent performance by all the cast. Booking was easy and efficient. Shortage of ladies loos. Expensive ice cream £3.50!! beyond a joke.

We, my wife and I, enjoyed the show very much - a barrel of laughs! All performers were excellent. Highly recommended. Only quibble: the Ice Creams in the Interval were very expensive; so we chose to avoid them. A shame!

Review: Hobson's Choice At The Vaudeville Theatre

Hobson's Choice, currently playing at London's Vaudeville Theatre, is quite an underwhelming show. It is an extremely gentle comedy which, if it was a TV series, would almost certainly be played on a Sunday afternoon. There is nothing in the show that makes a huge impact but, equally, there is nothing wrong with the show; it potters along pleasantly, just without the same kick that a lot of West End shows have. The show is celebrating its one-hundredth anniversary, so perhaps it has just dated a little.
