Florian Zeller's work continues to intrigue me. This one of his plays "played" less with the tricks of the mind than others, relying instead on gripping content and superb performances to keep the audience glued to their seats. If there is one concern, it involved the set. Depending on where one sat, you could either see what was being written on the walls or you could not, leaving many audience members wondering what they were missing. Secondly, while I understand how difficult it is to suggest chaos and instability, I am not certain that throwing things around on the stage is the most effective vehicle. In this production, this bit of stagecraft was used so often that the point was more than made (and made, and made again). Where the director hope to augment the audience's appreciation of both deterioration and despair, in fact it was deadening.
